Christ the King Province, Argentina
In 1939, two Basilian Sisters from Ukraine—Mother Sofronia Erdely and Mother Marhareta Fendio—arrived in Argentina to serve the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic faithful, settling in Apostoles, Misiones.
Despite challenges, including opposition from the Latin Church, they began pastoral and catechetical work, especially among children in rural “colonies.” Over time, the mission grew through local vocations and support from Sisters in Ukraine and the U.S. Expanding to several provinces and abroad, they became a vibrant witness of Eastern Catholic spirituality.
Today, the Sisters run four schools for over 4,300 students, teach Ukrainian language and culture, and serve in pastoral ministries, including care for the elderly and vulnerable children. Their centers are located in Buenos Aires, Mendoza, and Misiones. Remaining faithful to their Basilian roots—prayer, poverty, and service—they preserve the Basilian identity.
